Description

Workshop Title: "Is it Real or is it True?"

Kansas City poet Jermaine Thompson will lead an exploration of word and memory in this workshop inspired by two Open Spaces artworks installed in the Crossroads District. Dreams of Flight by Randy Regier, and Never Records by Ted Reiderer lead their audience/participants to new perspectives on memory and how it is held and recorded. This workshop experience will span their installations, a dedicated writing session, and a walk in the Crossroads District, focused on the themes of memory and our sense of "the real."

Starting at the Kansas City Art Institute's Crossroads Gallery, you will explore and discuss Regier's meditation on childhood memory, for which the artist has made a 1960's toy and a world of objects to surround it, all audaciously fictitious and real. With Jermaine, you will delve into “childhood memory as a source of world-making” as you compose your own poetic work. The workshop group will then take an eight-minute walk to Never Records, a vinyl record studio where Open Spaces artist Ted Reiderer will lead you on a tour of sound. Your group will produce a vinyl recording of your new, poetic works to be added to the Never Records archive.

Jermaine, who recently received an MFA in poetry at UMKC, is known in KC literary circles for his tremendous ability to capture voices in poetry. His work resounds with and recreates the communal voices of his Mississippi upbringing. Jermaine is a well-seasoned educator and inspiring writing coach. He believes that poetry, like Regier’s work, is often a “stew of found artifacts and constructed parts.” Join Jermaine for an urban exploration of the flexibility of memory, the practice of poetry and walking as a creative pursuit! Pencils and paper will be provided.
