On June 2, 1875, a group of art students had the radical idea to create their own art school—one designed for and run by
independent artists. These students broke away from the
National Academy of Design and started the Art Students League of New York—an atelier-style institution where
anyone with an interest in art education can learn traditional fine art technique.
With more than 100 classes taught in-studio and online , League students make art from day one. League artists learn by doing, under the guidance of professional artist instructors. Free from a set curriculum and restrictive grading system, League students can focus on making art.
There are no applications or prerequisites. Course registration is by the month, and tuition is among the most affordable in New York City.
