ONLINE - The Importance of Accessibility and Inclusivity

This workshop is delivered by Justin Axon Training and Consultancy Ltd in partnership with Rochdale Borough Council, and is exclusively for unregistered Alternative Provision providers on the local authority approved list.

Delivered by Justin Axon Training and Consultancy Ltd, this training session is designed to help participants develop a deeper understanding of why accessibility and inclusivity are essential for individuals with additional needs and disabilities. It explores the barriers - both visible and hidden - that can limit access, participation, and a sense of belonging, and provides practical guidance on how to create environments that are welcoming and inclusive for all.

Through real-life examples, interactive discussions, and reflective activities, participants will gain insight into how inclusive practices not only benefit those with additional needs, but improve experiences for everyone. The session also addresses the legal responsibilities under frameworks such as the Equality Act 2010, while encouraging a values-driven approach rooted in empathy, respect, and equality.

Aims/Objectives:

• To understand what accessibility and inclusivity mean in the context of supporting individuals with additional needs and disabilities.

• To recognise the diverse barriers - physical, sensory, cognitive, social, and attitudinal - that can impact access and participation.

• To appreciate the legal, moral, and human rights foundations for inclusive and accessible environments (e.g. Equality Act 2010).

• To recognise and explore the positive impact that inclusive practices have on wellbeing, engagement, and outcomes for individuals with additional needs.

• To identify practical strategies to create more inclusive environments, communications, and activities across various settings.
