This workshop focuses on the application of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), a skills-based cognitive behavioral treatment to help people learn and use new strategies to develop a life that they experience as worth living, to treat individuals with substance use disorders (SUD). DBT-SUD is an evidence-based treatment that utilizes specific attachment strategies to engage clients, and incorporates skills to target addictive behaviors and improve quality-of-life.

Participants of this workshop will learn nuanced commitment strategies to help engage clients in the first session, as well as approaches to promote an increase in functional activities of returning to work and school throughout the course of treatment. Additionally, participants will learn skills designed to target addictive behaviors drawing from the concept of dialectical abstinence. This workshop is an adjunctive training to the Introduction to DBT course, and is intended for behavioral health professionals who wish to acquaint themselves with the components of DBT to treat a SUD clinical population, to increase their DBT skills development, and to increase engagement and commitment strategies with clients who have a pattern of disengaging from treatment. This workshop is appropriate for those who have completed “Introduction to DBT Parts I and 2.”
