About this event
Olfactory Research Notes is an online lecture series that presents important research done in olfaction, directly from the people who do it. This talk will take place over Zoom.
Lausanne-based researcher Tonia Ramogida from the EPFL Laboratory for Experimental Museology's (eM+) Terapixel Panorama team joins the IAO to share her research on real-time olfactory augmentation. During this talk, Tonia will discuss the Terapixel Panorama, scent collars, and the artistic work of translating historical works into scent. We'll also have time for a short Q&A.
ABOUT TERAPIXEL PANORAMA
The EPFL Laboratory for Experimental Museology (eM+), led by Professor Sarah Kenderdine, has digitized a massive and nationally iconic Swiss panorama painting - the Panorama of the Battle of Murten (1893-94) - to produce the world's largest digital image of a single object: the painting's 1.6 terapixel twin. The digital twin is augmented with a layered and fully dynamic soundscape, high-fidelity scans of 3D objects, 4D volumetric videos, as well as a fully dynamic smellscape, which constitutes the first-ever use of real-time olfactory augmentation in the cultural heritage domain. It is staged in an interactive, panoramic framework which allows visitors to zoom in for spectacular views of minute details like brushstrokes and the texture of paint. Thanks to the augmentations, visitors enjoy a multisensual experience of a mammoth and detailed work. The Terapixel Panorama has debuted in Geneva and Hong Kong, and the team is looking forward to upcoming exhibitions across Switzerland as well as at Swissnex San Francisco in November 2025. The project reinterprets a pivotal moment in Swiss history and reimagines the 19th-century panorama. The Terapixel Panorama lays the framework for the future of digitally-mediated cultural heritage experiences that are engaging, aesthetic, interactive, immersive, and multisensory.
