Dr. Tim Steffens will present on “managing things vs. managing processes”. He is an associate professor and extension range specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and holds a joint appointment with West Texas A&M University Agricultural Sciences. His research interests include managing ecological succession using targeted grazing management; the effects of grazing management strategies on plant communities, soils, watershed function, wildlife habitat, and livestock productivity; developing integrated livestock-rangeland-cropping systems to improve soil quality and improve conservation. His current project is evaluating ways to integrate annual small grains into perennial grass pasture for winter forages and possible grain harvest in the High Plains.
Louis Martin will show “proof by the numbers” and discuss his internship program. He is the founder and CEO of Round River Resource Management, a land and livestock management company dedicated to economic and ecological sustainability. Louis has been involved in the ranching industry for over forty years and has been a student of Holistic Management since 1985. As a graduate from Texas A&M University, Louis founded Round River after being selected to lease and manage the Brett Gray Ranch by the Colorado State Land Board and The Nature Conservancy. Today, Round River manages over 50,000 acres of ranch lands, using regenerative time-controlled grazing practices and livestock as tools to restore ranch lands and provide profitability to land and livestock owners, while offering a pathway into ranching for aspiring agriculturists through an internship/apprenticeship/mentoring program.
David Chaney will discuss wills, trusts, and estate planning to keep multi-generational ranches intact. He is the owner of Legacy Succession, a 56-year-old, three-generation family firm. David’s approach to helping clients achieve their goals is that instead of preparing the road ahead for our children, we should prepare our children for the road ahead. This simple shift in perspective has proven much more effective in empowering future generations and formulating legacy and succession plans to foster a new generation of leaders poised for even greater success than their predecessors. David currently holds the series 24, 26, 63, 65, 6, and 7 securities licenses. He has received the professional designations of Chartered Financial Consultant, Chartered Life Underwriter, and Certified Advisor in Philanthropy. In 2020 David authored the book “Most Valuable”, which has been immensely successful in helping readers experience what other families have achieved through this unique form of family planning.
