OHC25: Sri Lanka College of Technology [Open Access]
Overview
Maradana College of Technology can trace its origins to the Government Technical College, one of the oldest institutes for higher education in Sri Lanka.
Initially housed in a converted coffee warehouse, the school consisted of a small workshop, laboratory, lecture room, and classroom. Constructed in 1903, the red-and-white brick building has been a recognised landmark of the city for over 120 years. Designed in an architectural style typical of the British colonial period, the building still retains its steel columns, stone staircase, cast-iron rainwater pipes and other decorative and structural elements.
Since its foundation, the College has undergone several notable transitions, helping to shape the history of higher education in Sri Lanka. It has been instrumental in the formation of several departments within the education sector, including the establishment of the Government College of Fine Arts, which later became the University of Moratuwa.
Today, Maradana Technical College sits within the Department of Technical Education and Training. It continues to equip students with vocational and technological skills, serving generations of Sri Lankans seeking careers in engineering, applied sciences and technology.
