OHC25: MdSA Studio [Open Access]
Overview
Enveloped inside the Kotte wetlands, the Manodha de Silva and Associates (MdSA) studio rises discreetly from its surrounding marshland. Designed by de Silva as a workspace and office for his architectural practice, the building aims to blend with its surroundings, working with the local environment rather than against it.
De Silva’s design uses sunlight, natural ventilation, and daily temperature fluctuations to keep the interior comfortable, reducing the need for air conditioning. Sitting lightly atop the marsh, the building allows air and water to move freely beneath, creating microclimates that help cool the building and support local plant and animal life. Rammed-earth walls provide thermal stability while reducing the project’s carbon footprint, and a prefabricated steel frame ensured quick assembly with minimal disturbance to the site.
A chartered architect and member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, de Silva is the founder and principal of MdSA. The practice prides itself on being driven by research and experimentation, collaborating closely with local builders and craftspeople to explore alternative modes of construction, particularly in environmentally sensitive contexts.
Visiting the MdSA Studio is an opportunity to see how clever architectural design can create low-cost, energy-efficient buildings that care for the surrounding environment without sacrificing comfort, modernity and craftsmanship.
