OHC25: Ivy Ceramics Studio [Open Access]

By Geoffrey Bawa Trust

Overview

Explore Ivy Ceramics Studio as part of Open House Colombo 2025.

Tucked under a large Neem (Kohomba) tree is Ivy Ceramics, the small home studio of ceramicist and artist Senali Nihara Cooray. The studio serves as a personal workspace for Senali, who also runs pottery classes and workshops in the surrounding garden.

Built in 2019, the structure's shape subtly reflects the slanted roofs of the artist’s neighbouring ancestral home. The building is designed to blend into nature over time, and the form and function of the space are tied closely to the surrounding environment.

Senali transitioned into ceramics after studying and working in interior design. Her work is known for pushing the sculptural boundaries of ceramics, using its form and materiality to reflect the human experience and explore the themes of childhood, memory, culture, and religion as a social construct.

Visitors to Ivy Ceramics will have the opportunity to see the artist at work and even try their hand at pottery, while admiring this small garden studio.
