This course will review how executive dysfunction affects a child’s ability to complete functional tasks within their school environment.

About this event

Course Description

This course will review executive functioning (EF) skill development and how executive dysfunction affects a child’s ability to complete functional tasks within their school environment. Occupation based tools, goal writing and intervention approaches to address executive dysfunction within a child’s natural environment will be introduced and discussed.

  • Understanding the development of EF skills.
  • Assessing EF skills within a school system using occupation-based assessment tools.
  • Writing occupation-based goals to address executive dysfunction within a school system.
  • Planning occupation-based, top-down interventions to address the functional deficits associated with executive dysfunction within school-based practice.

Time-Ordered Agenda

6:00 – 6:15 pm Review the development of executive functioning skills.

6:15 – 6:30 pm Small group discussions of the challenges children who present with executive dysfunction often encounter in school.

6:30 – 6:45 pm Introduction of occupation-based tools that can be utilized to assess executive functioning abilities in the school environment.

6:45 – 7:00 pm Review of writing occupation-based goals within the school environment.

7:00 – 7:30 pm Small group goal writing and intervention planning based presented case studies.

7:30 – 7:50 pm Presentations and evaluation of goals and intervention plans

Learning Objectives

  • Attendees will understand and discuss the development of executive functioning skills in children.
  • Attendees will identify and discuss the challenges children with executive dysfunction frequently encounter in the school environment.
  • Attendees will develop occupation-based goals to address executive dysfunction within the school environment.
  • Attendees will develop and present an occupation-based treatment plan to address executive dysfunction within the school environment.
  • Attendees will compare, contrast and critique occupation-based goals and treatment plans which address executive dysfunction.

About the Presenter:

Kelly A. Lavin, OTD, OTR/L has been a practicing occupational therapist for over 20 years, specializing in pediatrics. She has extensive experience in school-based practice and has taught at multiple institutions. She is the primary author of the research study, Comparison of Executive Function Skills between Children with Sensory Integrative Deficits, Typically Developing Children and Children with Attention Deficit Disorder, which is currently under peer review.

In lieu of a monetary refund, Therapeutic Resources also offers a credit for the full amount paid up until 5 days before the event. No refunds or credits are offered after the day of the course. If the course is canceled by Therapeutic Resources due to low registration, illness or cancellation of instructor, or inclement weather. Therapeutic Resources will refund the full amount paid for the course.
