Overview

Topic: Newport Bay Trash Interceptor

Topic: Newport Bay Trash Interceptor

Speaker:

Robert Stein, PhD, PE, Assistant City Engineer, City of Newport Beach

Mr. Stein is an Assistant City Engineer with the City of Newport Beach's Public Works Department.

During his 26 years at the City, Bob partnered with staff, NGOs and consultants to secure grant funding and contributions to start the City's Watershed Enhancement Program that notably includes the 40-acre restoration in Big Canyon.

Bob has his PhD in Civil Engineering from UCI and lives with his wife Anna in Laguna Beach.

Synopsis:

The City of Newport Beach has constructed a sustainably-powered system that will collect a significant amount of trash from upstream sources before it enters the bay and ocean. The $5 million floating Trash Interceptor is expected to reduce the amount of trash and debris reaching the Upper Newport Bay by 80 percent (estimated between 100 to 500 tons a year). The project supplements other efforts already in place, including trash booms, storm drain collection systems, and floating skimmers, to prevent trash from entering the sensitive aquatic environment of the Upper Bay preserve.

This presentation will look at the design challenges; novel materials, fabrication and installation hurdles; and the civil engineer’s role in leading collaboration among consultants, funding and regulatory agencies, and contractors on a small, yet complicated, project.
