Buffalo Maritime Center Bicentennial Flotilla Safety Guidelines for Recreational Boaters
- Advanced space for recreational vessels to tie off will not be held at the start and end locations of each flotilla. Space to tie off may be available on a first-come, first-served basis, but boaters must comply with any applicable permitting or other docking regulations.
- Recreational vessels participating in each flotilla are asked to line up behind vessels provided by the Buffalo Maritime Center, New York State Canal Corporation, Marine patrol agencies, and any commercial tour operators who may be participating.
- It is important that all vessels stay in order during each flotilla. No boats should approach the Buffalo Maritime Center vessel.
- Recreational boaters participating in each flotilla will not be able to lock through with the Buffalo Maritime Center or New York State Canal Corporation vessels; but will be allowed to lock through afterwards.
- Adequate space (at least 5’) should be given to other recreational vessels within Canal locks. Canal lock tenders will be on site to direct and coordinate vessels.
- Please be sure to use your required marine navigation lights. Additional lighting is encouraged if available.
- Please allow at least 20 feet between each vessel for safety purposes.
- All vessels will travel slowly (maximum 5mph).
- Vessels can communicate with one another through marine radio channel 13.
- There will be tow services available in each region in the event that a vessel becomes inoperable. In the event of this happening, the applicable vessel should notify others on marine radio channel 13.
