*This webinar is part of our NYAC Summer Encore Series — a limited-time showcase of archived programs, re-airing exclusively this August*

The Gilded Age, also referred to as the American Renaissance, marked the first time that the titans of American finance and industry had more wealth than their European counterparts. With that wealth came the need to have any property they touched dripping in architectural detail and embellishment that rivaled the great cultural capitals of the world like London, Paris, and Rome — enter the Beaux-Arts movement. How did this style define New York City, and specifically, it's centers of knowledge? It's time to get an exclusive glimpse at some of the city's greatest Beaux-Arts rooms and buildings, and dive into the lives of the most prominent millionaires in American history.

Join New York Adventure Club for a four-part series that explores the stories and architecture of New York City’s Beaux-Arts movement during the Gilded Age. In Part Two, we'll uncover the finest examples of sculpture and murals that still adorn many of New York’s Beaux-Arts landmarks built during the American Gilded Age.

Led by architect Phillip James Dodd — author of An American Renaissance: Beaux-Arts Architecture on New York City with foreword by Julian Fellowes — our virtual experience surrounding these stunning murals and sculptures will include:

  • An overview of the City Beautiful movement, which believed that monuments honoring America’s past would beautify its cities as well as providing a sense of civic pride and social harmony.
  • A deep dive survey of the statues and memorials added during NYC's City Beautiful movement, including the Washington Square Arch, Augustus Saint-Gaudens statues of General Sherman and Admiral Farragut, and the work of Daniel Chester French at both the Richard Morris Hunt Memorial and the Manhattan Bridge Arch and Colonnade
  • A look at murals that were an essential expression of New York's Beaux-Arts architecture and the spirit of the American Renaissance, with special attention given to the work of Ezra Winter at the Cunard Building; the murals by Henry Siddons Mowbray at the Morgan Library and the University Club; and allegorical depictions by C. Paul Jennewein at the Woolworth Building
  • How the leading Beaux-Arts architects of the era incorporated dynamic sculptural programs into their designs using allegorical figures and ornamentation to provide historic symbolism.
  • Murals decorating New York’s Beaux-Arts landmarks that were added later as part of the federal government’s Works Projects Administration (WPA), including Edward Laning’s work at the New York Public Library, and Reginald Marsh at the Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House — as well as more recent commissions added by Richard Haas and Allyn Cox
  • How many sculptural programs were never fully realized due to lack of funds, leaving buildings such as the General Grant National Memorial, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in a unfinished state
