Design the Block is a hands-on architecture workshop designed for students in grades K–12. Over the course of two days, students will explore how cities are built, who they're built for, and how we can make them better for everyone. Through drawing, modeling, collaboration, and community storytelling, students will become young architects, learning how to design blocks, streets, and shared spaces that reflect the communities they imagine.
Guided by practicing designers, volunteers, and real NYC urban conditions, participants will build city blocks with building blocks and forms, create collaborative street murals, and even design small public structures like community sheds.
This program emphasizes architecture, urban planning, sustainability, and social justice in a playful and thoughtful way—no prior experience necessary.
