About this event

Family & Education • Education

nycoba's Design the Block is a hands-on architecture workshop designed for students in grades 6–12. Throughout the day, students will explore how cities are built, who they're built for, and how we can make them better for everyone. Through drawing, modeling, collaboration, and community storytelling, students will become young architects, learning how to design blocks, streets, and shared spaces that reflect the communities they imagine.

Guided by practicing designers, volunteers, and real NYC urban conditions, participants will build city blocks with building blocks and forms, create collaborative street murals, and even design small public structures like community sheds.

This program emphasizes architecture, urban planning, sustainability, and social justice in a playful and thoughtful way—no prior experience necessary.

  • Hands-on urban design & model-making activities
  • Street mural collage and creative drawing
  • Small group mentorship from designers and architecture students
  • Final gallery-style exhibition of all student work
  • Guest visits from local leaders and creative professionals
  • All materials provided – just bring your ideas!

🧱Who Should Attend?

This workshop is designed for students in Grades 6–12 (First seats go to members of the Children's Aid Society group) and is a special partnership with the Harlem Children's Aid Society. Participants will be grouped by age for activity support and depth. No experience in architecture is needed—just curiosity and creativity!
