About this event

Community • Heritage

South Minneapolis historian Susan Hunter-Weir will lead a tour of the Pioneer & Soldiers Memorial Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Minneapolis. It is the resting place of a fascinating cross section of the city's earliest residents, including veterans, abolitionists, and Scandinavian immigrants and some people who fit into all three categories. The walk will focus on the immigrants who participated in this conflict and how their stories are interwoven with the greater story of the Civil War and the abolition of slavery.

The tour will meet at the caretaker's cottage, in the middle of the cemetery. The walking portion will be gently paced and there will be chairs in the shade around the cottage.

You are encouraged to stay after the walk for questions and conversations. If you think you have an ancestor buried at Pioneer & Soldiers, Susan will explain how to use the cemetery's resources for your research.

Since we will be walking and the ground is uneven, please dress accordingly.

Please Note: Refunds are not available, please ensure that you are able to attend before you register.
