About this event
Join the student judges as they — and you! — vote on how well each mathematician conveys a big idea in math. Every vote counts, so come ready to listen and play along.
Six mathematicians will take center stage with the single objective of presenting a very big or deep idea in math to a panel of six youth judges.
- The contest organizers hope this competition calls attention to culturally responsive, grounding, and sustaining approaches to engage young people with mathematics.
- The Young People’s Project (YPP) uses Math Literacy Work to develop the abilities of elementary through high school students to succeed in school and in life, and in doing so involves them in efforts to eliminate institutional obstacles to their success.
Teachers, here's your homework!
You and your class have some options:
- Screen share in Zoom + your class plays along in Kahoot. We'll provide simple instructions ahead of time. (No logins required except your own.)
- Share the Zoom link (it's the same for everyone) and let students connect on their own devices. From there they can also play along in Kahoot! Younger students can view the game with their parents.
Too much info? Don't worry, we will send all of this to you in your confirmation email once you register.
As ever, the NMF is free and open to the public, with activities designed for all ages, from very young children to adults.
We invite you to celebrate the fun, beauty, and power of math through games, puzzles, math, magic, uplifting and intriguing talks, beautiful and engaging films and film panels, live performances, and much more.
The National Math Festival is organized by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) and the National Museum of Mathematics (MoMath).
