NICET Level I Asphalt Testing Certificate Preparatory Course

This course prepares students for the National Institute of Certified Engineers and Technicians (NICET) Level 1 Certification, a nationally recognized and industry-wide accepted program in the field of Asphalt Testing. The NICET Certifications are most required by local and state jurisdictions and by federal agencies. The National Institute of Certified Engineers and Technicians has recognized our institution as an official training provider for NICET Certifications.

The prep course is designed for the inspectors, consultants, and contractors responsible for project inspection, quality control, quality assurance, and management of asphalt pavement operation. Certification provides in-depth knowledge of asphalt construction procedures and field inspection. Students will learn sampling, aggregate types and their behavior, asphalt mix design, and the latest field practices.

Students attend the class live from home; the course structure is the same as an in-person class. This option provides a classroom experience but benefits from not traveling to and from the campus.

Student Learning Objectives/Outcomes:

The construction of high-quality asphalt is the goal of the construction industry. Effective inspection is key in achieving that goal. A high-quality oversight is a difference between poor and excellent-performing pavement. NICET Certification in Asphalt Testing plays a pivotal role in providing qualified and experienced inspectors to fulfill industry demand. NICET Level I certifications mean that any person certified in Asphalt Testing attains credentials to provide a high quality of oversight — and ultimately the quality of products and services—will be of the highest standards. NICET Certified Technicians are defined as “hands-on” members of the engineering team who work under the direction of Engineers, Scientists, and Technologists. They have knowledge of the components, operating characteristics, and limitations of engineering systems and processes particular to their area of specialization.

Training and Course Objectives:

Personal and Worksite Safety:

• Determine and wear personal protective equipment (PPE)
• Identify and report task-specific hazards

Plans and Specifications:

• Identify locations on site from locations on plans
  Sampling of Asphalt Mixes and Components:

• Document sampling locations
• Follow sampling procedures to obtain samples
• Compare sampled material to product submittals
• Label sample original and materials
• Deliver samples to the laboratory

Asphalt Mix Sample Preparation:

• Reduce/split sample to test size
• Condition the samples for testing by temperature
• Label the prepared samples

Field and Laboratory Testing of Asphalt Mixes and Components:

• Perform field density tests of compacted asphalt mixes
• Perform aggregate gradation tests
• Perform asphalt content tests of asphalt mixes
• Determine the moisture content of asphalt mixes
• Determine the moisture content of aggregates
• Perform the maximum theoretical specific gravity and density tests of
• asphalt mixes
• Perform the bulk specific gravity tests of compacted asphalt mixes
• Perform the fractured face tests of aggregate

Communication of Results:

• Collect required test data for reports
• Document field observations
• Complete test forms and related reports
• Report results to supervisor
• Assess reasonableness of results

Equipment Calibration and Maintenance:

• Verify current calibration for Level I tests
• Verify equipment operation for Level I tests
