Join us on Thursdays for this series of easy-paced 1 to 2-mile guided walks along the Canalside Rail Trail or downtown Turners Falls! Connect with the community and enjoy nature and local history along the way!
This program is geared for seniors, but open to all! Dress for the weather with comfortable footwear and bring water. Inclement weather cancels. Meet in front of the main entrance.
Some of our upcoming walks include:
- October 2 - Canal Draw Down 101 - The annual canal draw down has been extended for one week, allowing us a rare encore of this popular walk. Take a stroll along the Canalside Rail Trail and absorb local history with and DCR staff and guest staff from Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center.
- October 9 - The Story of Ktsi Amiskw - Walk along the Connecticut River and the Canalside Rail Trail as we share a Pocumtuck and Abenaki creation story about the Papacomtuquash (Deerfield River), Wequamps (Sugarloaf Mountain) and Ktsi Amiskw (the Great Beaver, the Pocumtuck Range).
- October 16 - Riverside Hawk Watch - How do raptors know when to migrate? What are you likely to see along the Connecticut River and how can you learn more about Fall migrations? This hawk watch is great for beginners. Binoculars provided.
- October 23 - Poetry Walk - Share a poem about rivers with the group! It can be one you wrote or just one you love.
- October 30 - Fall Foliage Walk - What causes leaves to change colors? Why is New England's peak foliage so spectacular? How do native and non-native plants react to a changing conditions? This walk is here to answer your questions, and a great excuse to take in the peak foliage.
