About this Event:

In order to meet the goal of Biliteracy, dual language programs are faced with the challenge of teaching comprehensive literacy in each program language. This two-day online workshop will help educators with addressing English literacy instruction within a biliteracy program, focusing on how English differs from more transparent languages and how to attend to all components of comprehensive literacy, even in 80/20 programs, supporting the research of the Science of Reading. Bilingual teachers who have reservations about English literacy instruction will come away with practical applications, and two teacher model teams will learn important considerations for their literacy instruction collaboration.

Join us for this two-day, dynamic online learning experience designed for educators working in:

  • Transitional bilingual programs
  • Dual language programs
  • One-way and two-way immersion programs
  • Two-teacher models and one-teacher models

This institute includes synchronous (live) sessions via Zoom and access to optional asynchronous (pre-recorded) webinars, which will be shared during the live sessions to support and deepen your

As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strategies that support language and literacy development in English instruction K-2.
  • Describe the components of comprehensive literacy in grades K-2
  • Identify and describe best practices for teaching word recognition in English K-2
  • Identify and describe best practices for teaching language comprehension in English K-2
  • Discuss the importance of context within comprehensive literacy in English K-2
  • Explore how students will use what they know in the other program language during English instruction, and how to support their bilingualism

Daily Schedule

· Live sessions: 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Central Time (each day)

Interactive sessions will feature presentations, activities, and small group discussions

It is best if each participant joins from their own device to fully participate in breakout rooms and interactive elements. If this is not possible, please let us know so that we can prepare appropriately.
