New Geographies of Bradford
Event Information
Description
As part of Heritage Open Days Bradford Civic Society welcomes you to a special free event at Bradford Central Mosque. (Jamiyat Tabligh-UL-Islam, Westgate Bradford)
Using Bradford as a case study, Dr George Sheeran, a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow at the University of Bradford, will examine how Bradford has changed, and how the architecture of Islam has given a new perspective to the city.
New Geographies of Bradford: Islamic Architecture and a Sense of Place
As towns and cities grew and developed in the nineteenth century they took on specific characteristics. They might be identified by the types of industries that resided there, or communities that resided, often from different parts of the country or from abroad.
Over the past half century and more, many changes have again taken place. Large areas of towns and cities have been cleared and replaced; traditional industries have declined; while some industrial towns have gained large migrant populations. All of this means that former perceptions of towns and cities can no longer be taken for granted: urban environments have been re-made and cultural landscapes have changed.
“What we need,” says Dr Sheeran, “is a new geography of some of our towns and cities. Bradford is a good example of what I mean, since change there is not simply physical or economic, but cultural also. It is these changes that I shall be exploring in the course of this talk.”
Refreshments will be provided for guests.
Please arrive for the talk to begin at 11am. As with all places of worship, we would ask you be respectful and will detail specific courtesies or requirements in a reminder email closer to the time as well as updating this page.
