NEW! BROKEN HALOS: The Hidden Abuse of Children in Cults

This is a 4 hour training that introduces victim services professionals into the elements of investigating child abuse cases.

SUMMARY:
This presentation explores the hidden issue of child abuse in cults, examining how high-control groups exploit authority, fear, and isolation to harm children. Through case studies, survivor testimonies, and analysis of cult dynamics, we will uncover how abuse is normalized, why it often goes undetected, and what can be done to intervene. Participants will leave with a deeper understanding of the long-term impact of abuse in cults and strategies to support survivors and prevent future harm.
OBJECTIVES:
- Identify the defining characteristics of cults and how they create conditions that enable child abuse.
- Analyze case studies to recognize patterns of abuse and control used in different cult environments.
- Explain the psychological, social, and spiritual impacts of cult-related abuse on survivors.
- Apply strategies for prevention, intervention, and support for individuals affected by cult involvement.
PRESENTER: David A. Betz
Dave currently serves as the Vice President of Operations at the National Children’s Alliance. Prior to this role, he dedicated twenty-five years to the Harford County, MD Sheriff’s Office, where he held various positions including Director of the Harford County Child Advocacy Center and investigator of child abuse cases from 1998 to 2011. Throughout his career, Dave also served as the Public Information Officer/Spokesperson, a member of the Special Response Team, and held assignments in the Patrol Division. He is recognized as an instructor in workplace violence prevention.
Dave's commitment to child advocacy extends beyond his local roles. He has contributed significantly to the field as a member of the National Children’s Alliance Board of Directors and an advisory board member of the Child Protection Center in Cedar Falls, IA. He is also involved with the Maryland Children’s Alliance and the Iowa Chapter of Child Protection Centers.
In addition to his law enforcement and advocacy work, Dave has shared his expertise as a business consultant for various non-profit and for-profit organizations. He has owned and operated several businesses, demonstrating his entrepreneurial spirit.
Dave is highly educated, holding a Doctor of Business Administration degree with a concentration in Leadership from Liberty University. He earned his Master’s Degree in Management from Johns Hopkins University and his Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, also from Liberty University. His professional certifications include Certified Protection Professional and Professional Certified Investigator from the American Society for Industrial Security.
