Welcome to Neuroscience Behind Change!

This asynchronous, online course can be completed independently or as part of the Neurobiology of Addiction Microcredential. Students can move through materials at their own pace.

This course provides foundational information about how neurons communicate, and how the brain changes in response to it's environment and experiences (plasticity). This information provides learners with a foundational lexicon in neuroscience as it relates to how the brain changes in response to learning, injury and/or other changes (e.g. substance use, aging, etc.)

This course will cover...

  • Chemical and electrical signaling between neurons
  • Types of synapses and their functions
  • Action potentials: How chemical signals propagate
  • Neurotransmission: Types of transmitters, chemical structures and functions, dopamine synthesis, phasic activity
  • Structural and functional plasticity: how the brain learns, changes and adapts to experience or injury
  • Mechanisms of Plasticity: synaptogenesis, neurogenesis, pruning, long-term potentiation, long-term depression, etc.
  • Plasticity throughout the life span and in the context of chemical dependence.

Frequently asked questions

What is the format of these online microcredentials?

These microcredentials are presented in an online asynchronous format, meaning that you can access the course materials at any time that is convenient for you.

For how long will the course materials be available to me?

You have up until the end date listed on the event page, after which you will no longer have access to the course materials, nor will you be able to access the course completion quizzes. Consequently you must complete all course activities prior to the end date.

Can I get CEUs for this?

Yes, this course is MCBAP Approved for 1 Specific CEU hour. We are also currently undergoing review for approval for CEUs via Association of Social Work Board (ASWB).

Can I take the course individually, or do I have to sign up for the whole microcredential?

You are welcome to take each course individually. Each course in the Neuroscience of Addictions course is individually approved for CEUs through MCBAP. If you complete all three courses you will have completed the full microcredential.

How will I receive my certificate?

Upon successful completion the quiz, you will be redirected to a google form where you can request a personalized certificate which will be emailed to you within 24-72 hours. If you need immediate proof, the Google Form includes certificate language and can serve as interim verification.
