New immigration figures for 2024, published by the Office for National Statistics on 22 May, are set to show a marked fall in net migration – the measure that has dominated the UK immigration debate since 2010. This will surprise most voters, who expect it to keep increasing; and it also poses a question to politicians: does our immigration debate continue to focus solely on net migration and efforts to drive it lower, or is it time to look afresh at what the politics and policy of immigration are trying to achieve?

Join us on the day that the new ONS statistics are published, where an expert panel discusses the new figures and what they mean for immigration policy and political debate.

We will also examine new British Future research into public attitudes to immigration numbers, and discuss the government’s new Immigration White Paper, including proposed changes to citizenship rules.

Panellists include Sunder Katwala (Director of British Future), Christabel Cooper (Director of Research at Labour Together), Marley Morris (Associate Director for Migration, Trade and Communities, IPPR) and Will Prescott (Senior Research Fellow, Bright Blue)
