Nelly's Story: BACK DUE TO POPULAR DEMAND
Overview
Nelly's Story
Told through the eyes of a 9-year-old girl named Nelly, this heartfelt tale follows her courageous journey to save her family from the grips of domestic violence by embracing the principles of Kwanzaa. As Nelly discovers the power of unity, self-determination, and purpose, she learns that healing begins with honoring one's culture and showing respect for self and others.
At the heart of the story is the African philosophy of Ubuntu—“I am because you are.” Nelly comes to understand that her strength is deeply connected to the wellbeing of her family and community. Through her actions, she teaches that when we see ourselves in each other, we can break cycles of harm and build a future rooted in love, resilience, and shared humanity.
Nelly’s Story is for the entire family. It captivates children and adults alike with its powerful message, inspiring meaningful conversations about respect, culture, and the importance of community.
The original play, written by Sharron Lewis.
