Course O verview
This dynamic and comprehensive training will highlight and discuss the recent changes implemented within the DSM-5-TR. Evidence-based assessment tools used to assess and diagnose commonly occurring mental health disorders will be discussed and reviewed. This course will highlight risk and prognostic factors, culture and sex/gender related diagnostic issues, differential diagnoses, and comorbidity of common mental health disorders. In addition, recording procedures, subtypes/specifiers, diagnostic features, associated features, prevalence, development and course of various mental health disorders will be emphasized. Issues related to culture, racism, and discrimination in the DSM-5-TR will be addressed. This course will emphasize how to recognize and apply evidence-based practices in the clinical treatment of mental health disorders. In addition, the application of knowledge will be explored through breakout sessions and case study scenarios.
Course Objectives
Understand updates made in the DSM-5-TR and related documentation and evidence-based treatment options.
D emonstrate skills necessary in order to appropriately screen, recognize, and diagnose mental health disorders.
R ecognize culture and sex/gender related diagnostic issues and how to effectively address these concerns.
Course Instructors:
D r. Rachel Swope earned her doctoral degree from the Tulane University School of Social Work and her MSW from the University of Alabama. She is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker in Alabama and has been in the mental health field for over 15 years. She currently owns a private practice and serves on the faculty of the University of Texas at Arlington School of Social Work in the BSW, MSW, and Substance Use Certification Programs. Dr. Swope is a board approved Clinical Supervisor in the state of Alabama.
D r. Swope has worked with children and adults, military social work, geriatric inpatient psychiatry, and with incarcerated youth. Dr. Swope is the Southern Regional Representative for the NASW-AL Chapter. She is certified in Trauma-Informed Yoga and specializes in EMDR and PSB-CBT. She has been a public speaker and presenter for over 10 years.
