Navigating Leave Laws: Surviving the Whirlpool of Workers’ Comp, FMLA, ADA, STD and COBRA

Effective management of employee leaves is important not only to avoid potential fines and penalties from government authorities but also to reduce the exposure your business faces in the form of unnecessary insurance premiums, claims expense and other hidden costs. There are various types of leave to consider and several different laws requiring compliance. Our co-presenters Jim Southworth and Mike Faber from the Pittsburgh office of the law firm, Dickie McCamey, are experts in Workers’ Compensation law, the Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA), the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), non-occupational disability benefits, and COBRA. Seminar attendees will come away with an understanding of how they all work together to be able to design company policies and procedures to follow the law and meet the specific needs of their business.

Some of the key questions the seminar will address are:

Why is it important to run Family Medical Leave concurrently with Workers’ Compensation leave?
When should COBRA be offered to an employee out on leave, including Workers’ Comp?
What do I do if it is unclear whether the employee should be out on Workers’ Comp or Short-Term Disability?
What is “Reasonable Accommodation” under the Americans with Disabilities Act and when do I need to provide it to an employee?
What positive impact does effective leave management have on costs to my company?

Guest speakers will include Jim Southworth and Mike Faber, who are both attorneys practicing at Dickie McCamey in downtown Pittsburgh.

Jim Southworth is a principal of Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote, P.C. He concentrates his practice in the areas of employment and labor law and employment immigration, as well as alternate dispute resolution and mediation.
Mike Faber is a shareholder of Dickie, McCamey & Chilcote, P.C., and a member of the firm’s Workers’ Compensation Group. He concentrates his practice in representing employers and their insurance carriers in workers’ compensation cases and has litigated hundreds of workers’ compensation claims at the trial and appellate levels. In addition to litigating workers’ compensation claims, Mr. Faber counsels on methods to control, manage, and avoid such claims.

The seminar will last approximately 90 minutes with at least 30 minutes included after the presentation to answer questions. Please limit your registration to 2 attendees per company.
