Slack - Kristi Ehrig-Burgess, Library, Archives and Digitization Manager, Mingei International Museum - Have you ever been around a “slacker” or around someone just “slacking off”? We all know what “slacking” means, or do we? What if I said, “I ‘slacked’ you in Slack”? Would that make any sense to you? What is Slack? What are its practical applications and is it free? Does it really “work” to streamline communications with your colleagues or is it another lazy pie in the sky app. Hint: Skeptical adopter, likes company’s tagline.
Accessibility & Self Care - Karin Mente, Librarian, Zovio, Inc. - This is the year I spontaneously lost my hearing, but (less spontaneously) gained a newborn. I will share some of the software tools that have helped me cope with the stress and challenges of sudden deafness, parenting while working, and pandemic living. These tools include a few self-care apps along with the accessibility tools found within Google Docs, OneNote, Microsoft Teams, and YouTube.
Openoffice - Marian Ekweogwu, MLIS Candidate, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign - An introduction to the LibreOffice Suite, a free alternative to the Microsoft Office Suite. LibreOffice is a free and powerful office suite, and a successor to OpenOffice.org (commonly known as OpenOffice). Its clean interface and feature-rich tools help you unleash your creativity and enhance your productivity. includes analogues to six productivity applications: a word processor, spreadsheet, presentation graphics, drawing, equation editor, and database. I consistently use Writer, Calc, and Impress in my school and professional work. The real wonder of this suite, besides it's extraordinary price, is how nicely it plays with other, better known applications.
Stack Overflow - Camille Mathieu, Associate Knowledge Officer, Jet Propulsion Laboratory - When you have a question, sometimes you need an instruction manual – and sometimes you just need an answer! Stack Overflow is a question-and-answer (Q&A) forum that allows communities of users to post questions, comment on each other’s posts, and receive or submit answers. This talk will review the Stack Overflow as it is used at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), and discuss how this tool has been utilized during mandatory telework.
