Description

Natural Selections: Hands-on Katazome and Indigo with Graham Keegan

We are extremely pleased to host textile designer and natural dye evangelist Graham Keegan for an exclusive hands-on katazome workshop.

In May and June of 2018, Graham will be leaving his native LA to embark on a tour of the United States where he will be talking about the beauty of natural dyes and giving away clippings of real indigo plants. Prior to our workshop, he will be giving a free lecture on natural dyes that will be open to the public. To ensure you have a seat, please RSVP for that HERE.

Afterward, ten lucky participants will get private instruction on drawing and cutting stencils, mixing rice paste, pinning fabric and printing, and dyeing their very own katazome.

Who: Graham Keegan is a textile designer working exclusively with natural dyes. Having learned through the study of the historical record and lots of hands-on experience, he now teaches others to dye. Graham advocates for the use of natural color by distributing dye plants, seeds, books, and kits. He specializes in print design using traditional block-print and hand cut stencil techniques. His prints are used by boutique designers and international brands for garments, home goods, accessories, and wallpapers. You can learn more about Graham and natural dyes here, here, and here.

What: Katazome is a traditional method of stencil dyeing cloth and fabric using a paste-resist process. It incorporates elements of both printmaking and painting to create beautiful and evolving patterns. The indigo dyed patterns are often used to create scarves, kimonos, and bed linens as well as cards and other stationery.
