Join us for a short, but sweet class on working with and waking up California native seed, led by Rancho Sierra Vista nursery manager Antonio Sanchez. This hands-on workshop will take place from 10am - 12noon. Topics to be covered include:
- Cleaning and identifying various species of native seed
- Practicing various seed treatment methods, including heat treatment, cold treatment, smoke treatment, scarification, and more
- Tips and tricks for sowing and growing out native seedlings, including how to reseacrh germination rates for native seed online
The workshop wil be led by Antonio Sanchez, nursery manager and restoration volunteer outreach coordinator for SAMOFund in Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area. Antonio has been working around native plants for nearly 2 decades, and has managed the nurseries at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden, worked as a landscaper at the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, worked as a nursery technician at the Theodore Payne Foundation for Native Plants, and co-founded and ran Nopalito Native Plant Nursery in Ventura, CA. Antonio was co-lead organizer for the California Native Food Symposium, the Southern California Monarch and Milkweed Conference, the first Ventura County Native Plant Symposium, and the California Native Sage Festival.

This workshop will take place outdoors at the Rancho Sierra Vista nursery. Much of the class will take place under shade, but attendees should be prepared to stand for at least 2 hours and be exposed to the cold and sun for various lengths of time. Please wear hiking or outdoor working attire, bring water/reusable water bottle, sunscreen, and a sun hat. Attendees under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. 2. Walk past the left side of the bathrooms, past the Eucalyptus grove.
3. Walk into and past the horse stable area, and into Rancho Sierra Vista Nursery.
