Description
Join us on September 21st for the National Day of Civic Hacking - a nation-wide Code for America Brigade Network Day of Action. With this year's focus on Civic Action for Justice, brigades acorss the country are focusing their efforts to help some of the 77 million people in the United States impacted directly by the criminal justice system. We're looking forward to making a positive impact through collective action with the rest of the Brigade Network.
By participating in Oakland's National Day of Civic Hacking, you will be able to:

Review and score the usability of various online services related to record clearance using a standard set of usability questions provided by Code for America.

Design and create a user-friendly “know your rights” guide, focused on a set of 5 rights provided by Code for America.

1:30 - 2:00PM: Speaker series
2:00 - 4:30PM: Groups work on usability scorecard and rights guide
4:30PM: Wrap up, share learnings with the group
This event is free to attend and open to the public - People with and without web technology skills are invitied to participate and make an impact. We're hosting this space where advocates, allies, developers, and designers, can join forces to address important community needs that impact all Oakland residents.

As part of National Expungement Week, Vangst Cannabis, partnered with The Allyance, is hosting an expungement clinic and career fair taking place at Golden Gate University in San Francisco on September 21st. The expungement clinic is looking for volunteers, and everyone is encouraged to attend to help with their efforts or to participate. Event details can be found here.
Code for America's Brigade Network is hosting events all over the nation on September 21st. If you're unable to attend any of those events, you can still support the ongoing efforts that Code for America and the Network are doing in the criminal justice space. Event Code of Conduct
All attendees, speakers, sponsors, and volunteers at our event are required to agree with the OpenOakland's Code of Conduct. Organisers will enforce this code throughout the event. We expect cooperation from all participants to help ensure a safe environment for everybody.
The National Day of Civic Hacking is part of OpenOakland's 2019 Event Series and sponsored by the Kapor Center for Social Impact. The event venue is graciously provided by East Bay for Everyone.

FAQs
I can't stay the whole time. Is it ok to come for part of the event?
Yes! Whether you're arriving late or leaving early, please still register to attend. While staying for the duration is encouraged, participation is still encouraged for anyone who can only support for a limited time.
What's the best transportation to the event?
East Bay for Everyone is located at 2044 Franklin St. in Downtown Oakland. 19th St BART station is the closest Bart stop, and multiple bus lines run through Thomas L. Berkley Way, which is just a few blocks from the venue.
Where can I park?
Metered street parking is available around the event venue.
What do I need to bring to enter the event?
The only thing you need to bring is yourself and a laptop or tablet to the event.
Why are you asking me to disclose my racial identity and gender?
OpenOakland events aims to include volunteers that represent all Oakland residents. We’re asking our participants for some identifying data to know what areas of our community we’ve succeeded at connecting with, and which areas need additional outreach from us to make them feel welcome at future events.
