MYTH OF DESCENT curator-led walkthrough of Hansell Gallery and PRS Library
Overview
Join curator dama for an intimate walkthrough of Myth of Descent, an exhibition inspired by the ancient Sumerian myth of Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth, whose journey through the underworld traces one of humanity’s earliest narratives of transformation, sacrifice, and return.
Structured around Inanna’s passage through seven gates, Myth of Descent explores cycles of loss and renewal, destruction and creation that are both personal and collective. As Inanna is stripped of her symbols of power, the exhibition invites us to confront what has been hidden, discarded, or silenced, and to consider how rebirth emerges not as a return to what was, but as a becoming of what is yet to be.
During the walkthrough, dama will share the conceptual framework behind the exhibition, the mythological and esoteric lineages informing the work, and reflections on descent as a feminist, psychic act and an essential process of unlearning and re-visioning power.
“My name is Inanna, Queen of Heaven and Earth.
Please let me in.
I have come to see what I have not yet seen,
to experience what I’ve not yet experienced,
and to learn what I do not yet know.”
