About the Milton and Katherine Chaffee Lecture on the Future of the Church:
First Congregational Church of Southington regularly invites a leading scholar or minister involved in work to understand or build the church for the future to deliver the Milton and Katherine Chaffee Lecture on the Future of the Church. Lecturers will be people of national reputation who draw people from our community and beyond. The lecture will help strengthen First Congregational Church as a center of church renewal and progressive theological thought.
First Congregational Church established the Milton and Katherine Chaffee Lecture on the Future of the Church using funds from a bequest by Katherine E. Chaffee. Mrs. Chaffee was a woman ahead of her time. Born in 1917, she was an independent woman who lived alone in the city of Hartford, loved to travel, was very active in her church, and thought nothing of walking alone on city streets to go to the market—even at night. She enjoyed a good joke, a hearty laugh, and a well-told story. Kay was a person of deep faith. She married for the first time when she was 61 years old. After her death in 2011, the church honored her and her late husband by naming a lecture series in their memory. The Rev. Dr. John Dorhauer, General Minister and President of the United Church of Christ, delivered the first Chafee lecture in April 2018.
