On October 22, the Montgomery County Lynching Memorial Project (MoCoLMP) will dedicate in Poolesville the first historical marker in our county to acknowledge a racial terror lynching. Mr. George Peck was murdered by a mob in Poolesville in 1880, one of three lynchings that took place in Montgomery County.
We will gather on the lawn next to the Poolesville Presbyterian Church, across the street from where the lynching took place. (If it rains, we will move the event a block away to Poolesville Memorial United Methodist Church, 17821 Elgin Road.) We have seating, but we expect an overflow crowd. You may wish to bring a folding chair.
The program will begin at 3 p.m., followed by a reception at Locals Farm Market (across the street) for simple refreshments and conversation.
The event is free and open to all. Parking is plentiful and will be clearly marked.

MoCoLMP is part of the statewide Maryland Lynching Memorial Project and a designated Community Remembrance Project of the Equal Justice Initiative. Funding for the marker came from Maryland LMP, the Montgomery County Remembrance and Reconciliation Commission, and many of our individual members. The Town of Poolesville gave us considerable in-kind support and assisted with securing the marker location.
