Event description
"Mounds of Meaning: Investigating the Histories of Kryžių kalnas (Hill of Crosses)"- A Presentation by PhD Candidate Ema Noella Kibirkštis

About this event

Ema Noëlla Kibirkštis, PhD Candidate, Department of Folklore, Memorial University of Newfoundland presents "Mounds of Meanings: Investigating the Histories of Lithuania’s Kryžių kalnas (Hill of Crosses)", a lecture and slideshow presentation, Saturday, Sept. 25 at 2pm. at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture, 6500 S. Pulaski Rd. Chicago, IL 60629.

Kryžių kalnas (“Hill of Crosses”) located in the Šiauliai county of Lithuania, is a popular destination for local and visiting Lithuanians, tourists, and Christian pilgrims. The meaning of this place has changed significantly since its mysterious beginnings, becoming a place of peaceful protest against Soviet occupation in the mid-1950s, to gaining worldwide attention after Lithuania’s restored independence in 1990. Based on graduate research and fieldwork in 2015, this presentation provides an anthropological and folkloristic analysis of the layered histories and meanings of Kryžių kalnas.

This program will be conducted in person in the Museum's Amber Ballroom. Masks are required and social distancing will be observed. In person registration is limited. Live streaming will be available for preregistered eTicket holders, who are not able to attend in person.
