Event description
Join us for a crowdsourced documentary about a new mother’s quest to understand how cargo bikes could change the world.

About this Event

Join BikeMN and Cycling Without Age Twin Cities for MOTHERLOAD, a crowdsourced documentary about a new mother’s quest to understand the increasing isolation and disconnection of the digital age, its planetary impact, and how cargo bikes could be an antidote. Stick around after the screening for a Q&A Skype session with director Liz Canning and an informal post-event gathering at Riverview Wine Bar across the street.

Filmmaker Liz Canning cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008. Hauling babies via car was not only unsustainable but took the freedom and adventure out of life, and Liz felt trapped. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying passengers and heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more, and MOTHERLOAD was born.

MOTHERLOAD features unconventional production methods (including crowdsourcing from non-filmmakers), genre-bending storytelling (experimental/personal/doc), and themes of movement-building, activism and courage to "go against the grain."

Ride your bike!

We’ll have rockstar bike parking available right outside the theater thanks to Slow Roll and the City of Minneapolis.

Considering bringing kids?

Some kids will enjoy the whole 86 minutes, and some might get restless. There are two brief images involving blood and suggesting violence (one still photo from a newspaper article, and a few shots from The Walking Dead with zombies). Also, there is one scene involving crude language that sensitive kids (and/or their parents) may find unsettling.

It's a fundraiser!

Any additional funds from ticket sales after expenses will be split by Cycling Without Age (Federal EIN #81-2914152) and the Bicycle Alliance of Minnesota (Federal EIN #41-1719332).

This screening was generously sponsored by Perennial Cycle and Slow Roll.
