Learn how to create a textured mosaic with slate, other materials from nature, and glass. Watch a demo to learn how to mix thin set, cut and prepare materials, and adhere slate and other mosaic pieces into a bed of thin-set mortar. In this class, you will learn different ways to use your materials to create texture and interest.

You'll create your own small mosaic to take home at the end of the workshop! Materials are provided, but students are encouraged to bring any special objects they would like to include in their mosaic, such as shells or pebbles.

Instructor: Janice Levitt is a mosaic artist based in Takoma Park. She enjoys creating mosaics inspired by nature and the human experience, making use of foraged natural materials such as slate, stone, and mica as well as ceramic and found objects.

About the organizer

Organized by
ARTS ON THE BLOCK

Arts on the Block (AOB) empowers creative youth to imagine and shape fulfilling futures, join the creative workforce, and contribute to the quality of life in their communities. AOB achieves its mission by providing real-world experiences in the arts and entrepreneurial training geared toward opening new pathways to learning, self-discovery, and achievement.

Founded in 2003, as a creative apprenticeship program under the umbrella of a larger organization in Montgomery County, MD, Artpreneurs, Inc. officially became an independent 501c3 nonprofit in 2007 and adopted Arts on the Block (AOB) as its trade name. In 2012, AOB expanded its programs to incorporate both high school and middle school age groups in multiple locations throughout Montgomery and Prince George’s counties and DC areas- reaching over 3,000 young artists since its inception. Today, Arts on the Block operates a working mosaic studio and arts center in Silver Spring, MD; provides annual direct service programs for over 400 children, youth, and young adults from ages 5 to 24 as well as 70 families who participate in dual-language (English/Spanish) programming; and has secured multi-year, high profile public art commissions with over 280 public art works that can be seen throughout the region.

Youth Arts Movement (YAM) children and families are provided with art supplies and technology to work through STEAM-focused creative learning activities in English and Spanish, supporting online engagement for young learners. Through The Apprentice Program (TAP) creative teens earn while learning about art, design practice, and creative careers. Apprenticeships lead to increasingly challenging public art projects, and a customized career path through placement on our studio crew. AOB programs are sequential and designed for social inclusion, positive youth development, and age-appropriate social and emotional learning as well as integrated play and art therapy aimed at long term pathways to attractive and stable art and design careers.
