About this event

  • Event lasts 4 hours

Enjoy the ecology of the fields and forests as we hike our way to Buzzards Roost to explore the geology of this incredible overlook. From there, we'll descend the dramatic cliffs that define Buzzards Roost on a switchback pathway, taking a moment to leave the loop and visit Wildcat Bluff and a unique overlook of the Susquehanna River. Then we will continue the loop hiking along Wildcat Run. Along the way, we'll talk about the what, and possibly the why, of what we see along the trail.

What to Expect:This is a moderate difficulty, 4-mile hike with some steep climbs on a rocky trail. There are no restrooms available on site.

Where to Meet: Parking is available in a small gravel pull off at the corner of Chimney Rock Road and Furnace Road (GPS coordinates: 40.038662, -76.606631)

What to Bring: Bring water, snacks, and personal supplies. Dress appropriately for the weather. Sturdy, closed toe shoes are a must. Hiking poles are suggested. Be prepared for muddy conditions in the case of recent rain.

Hike Leader: Mary Patterson is an Interpretive Ranger with the Lancaster Conservancy. She is passionate about wildflowers, butterflies, and all the wonderful things that can be discovered outside. Keenly in tune to the herbaceous plants that keep meadows and forest floors interesting, Mary also leads the local Susquehanna Nature Journal Club and is an active PA Master Naturalist.
