Forensic Odontology – Where the Teeth Do the Talking in the Legal System

Forensics, by definition, is the application of scientific methods and techniques to the investigation of legal issues. The teeth, being the hardest and durable structures in the human body, can play a unique role in making a positive identification of a human body along with nuclear and mitochondrial DNA, fingerprints when a body is damaged beyond visual recognition by fire, decomposition, or trauma.

This lecture will focus on the basic axioms and tenets used in making a positive dental identification and illustrated using actual case presentations to show how this technique is applied. This lecture is appropriate for all people who are interested in Forensic Sciences. Some of the material used in this lecture can be graphic and disturbing due to the nature of the topic.

At the end of this Course the Attendee should understand how to:

• Define the responsibility of the dental professional when keeping accurate dental records and radiography.

• Define the term subpoena.

• Define the role of the dental team in the subpoena process.

• Assist the forensic odontologist in positive identification of human remains.
