Founded in 1958, The New Camaldoli Hermitage is part of the Camaldoli branch of the Benedictine family founded by St Romuald in the late 10th century. Located on the mountainside approximately 1,300 feet above the Pacific Ocean in Big Sur, The Hermitage combines solitude and natural beauty.
The Hermitage is a worshipping community dedicated to contemplation and prayer. Visitors to the Hermitage have an opportunity to observe the monks dressed in robes as they participate in the Liturgy of the Word and the Holy Eucharist, but rarely does the public have an opportunity to know the monks as individuals.
Each monk has a role in the community, and each has a unique story that brought them to embrace a monastic life at the Hermitage.
"Monks Inside Out" strives to portray the essence of each monks personality and illuminate their life together in this exclusive and tranquil community setting.
Please join us for an interactive art event featuring photography by Kayleigh Meyers. Take a behind-the-scenes look at the stories and lives of the Roman Catholic monks of the New Camaldoli Hermitage through photography.
