2-Day Workshop - 7 hours each day
Date: Saturday, August 16 - Sunday, August 17, 2025
Time: 10am-5pm
Description: Metalsmith and educator, Tedd McDonah, has been teaching both university courses and intensive workshops on the ancient Japanese technique of mokume-gane for 20+ years. In this workshop, students will be shown his mokume-gane making process from beginning to end, A-Z, soup to nuts. We will start with raw materials that make for suitable billets - we will be using nickel silver and copper - and learn proper cleaning, firing/billet diffusion, post diffusion processing (lots of hammering), in-depth demonstrations of popular patterning processes of stock removal, deformation, twisting, and the tools that will help us do it!
Because of the limited contact hours, and the time-intensive nature of patterning, students may be encouraged to finish some of their patterned sheet independently. Participants will learn finishing techniques and are encouraged to participate in discussions on how they might wish to use their material.
Tuition: $250 + $65 materials fee
Materials: All materials will be provided
Location: Contemporary Craft - Raphael Building, Metals Studio (5645 Butler St., Pittsburgh, PA 15201)
Cancellations and Refunds: Workshop cancellations are decided three business days before the start date. If workshops must be cancelled due to insufficient enrollment, the entire class fee will be refunded through Eventbrite, or you may leave your workshop fee in your Contemporary Craft account for future workshops.
Refund Policy: Student refund requests must be made at least three business days before a class begins. There will be a $25 cancellation fee. No refunds will be given without three-business days notice. Processing of refunds takes approximately three weeks.
