Ayurveda is an ancient healing system from India that emphasizes balance among the mind, body, and spirit to support overall health and well-being. In Ayurvedic practice, each person is understood to have a unique constitution, or dosha—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha—which influences physical tendencies, personality traits, and health patterns. Ayurvedic massage, known as Abhyanga, uses warm herbal oils and rhythmic, nourishing strokes designed to calm the nervous system, improve circulation, support detoxification, and restore energetic balance. Unlike Western clinical massage, Ayurvedic bodywork is deeply tied to lifestyle practices, breath awareness, and the therapeutic use of oils and herbal preparations. For massage therapy students, studying Ayurvedic techniques provides a holistic approach to client care and expands the understanding of touch as a means to restore harmony and promote long-term wellness.
