Event description

Description

Join Carlos Rosario School and Washington Area Bicyclist Association for the 4th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on the Metropolitan Branch Trail.

We’ll provide the gloves, trash grabbers and materials needed for the cleanup. Please wear weather appropriate clothes for working outside and bring a water bottle! Thanks to the generosity of Campus Student Services, we will have coffee and snacks for folks. We will have access to the bathrooms at the school. If you own pruners or gloves that you particularly like, feel free to bring them for your own use. Bonus points for bringing your own coffee mug!

We will begin safety announcements and tool distribution promptly, so please arrive and check-in before 9 am!

What are we going to do?

Track 1 - General Trail Cleanup
You will focus on removing trash from the trail. This is a great task for young kids. A few adults would be great as well to clean near the fences along the trail hillsides north of the school.

Track 2 - Ravine Trash Cleanup
Scouring the ravine at Rhode Island Avenue is an annual tradition! This is a steep hillside, great for people with sturdy footing. You’ll want to wear comfortable shoes.

Track 3 - Monroe St Trash Cleanup
We’re going farther afield this year! We’ll be exploring the shrubbery north of Monroe St between John McCormack Dr and the fence of the train tracks. This group will walk 0.5 miles from the school to the start of the cleanup. We haven’t worked in this area before so we’ll have plenty of debris to remove! There is a fair amount of tight growing bushes so wear durable clothes that can withstand rubbing against branches.

Track 4 - Trail Etiquette Yard Signs
Carlos Rosario Student Government have translated trail etiquette yard signs into Spanish, French, and Amharic. This group will focus on sticker-ing the language on yard signs and then decorating them. At the end, we’ll install the yard signs on the trail and they will become part of the roving trail sign collection. This task is great for adults and kids.

The cleanup is weather dependent and will be cancelled if there is severe weather.

So that we have an accurate idea of attendance, please register all adults and children 10+.
