MLK Day of Action: Confronting injustice with courage

By UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media

Overview

UNC Hussman hosts a conversation with Helene Cooper — a Pentagon correspondent for The New York Times.

To honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., the UNC Hussman School of Journalism and Media will host Helene Cooper ’87, a Pentagon correspondent for The New York Times, for a conversation and Q&A moderated by UNC Hussman Associate Professor Meredith Clark and Academic Adviser Sergio Valdes.

Born in Monrovia, Liberia, Cooper moved to the United States in 1980 and decided to pursue journalism after reading "All the President’s Men" in high school.

After her time at UNC Hussman, she worked for The Providence Journal, The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times. Her work has been recognized with two George Polk Awards and a Pulitzer Prize, and she is the author of two bestselling books published by Simon & Schuster.

As a Times journalist, Cooper adheres to the paper’s ethical standards, carefully balancing the public’s right to know with the responsibility to protect lives and sensitive information when handling classified material.

Refreshments will be available at 5:30 p.m. in the Freedom Forum Conference Center prior to the event’s start at 6 p.m.
