The Maryland Journal of International Law ("MJIL")and the International Law Society ("ILS") are excited to share the 2023 Symposium: Economic Statecraft in a Multipolar World.
This event will focus on the use of economic statecraft as an influence in international law, both as to the foundation for international structures like the WTO or as a means for guiding tensions between countries like the United States and China, as well as the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.
The symposium will feature a keynote lecture from Dr. Matthew Ferchen from Yale Law School (9:15 am). In addition to the keynote address, the symposium will feature three panel discussions with three distinct but interrelated perspectives. First, the symposium will consider the use of economic policies as an influential tool in relations between the United States and China, as well as their relationships with other sovereign nations (10:20 am). Second, we will consider the legal effects of trade, and the international structures that govern trade, as a means for promoting climate change and human rights initiatives (12:55 pm). Finally, we will discuss the use of sanctions as a weapon during international conflicts, illustrated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine. (2:30 pm).
We invite you to join us as we explore these important topics.
