Join artist Melissa Ringold for a creative, hands-on workshop exploring the art of mixed media journaling. In this session, you’ll create two unique journals using a variety of materials and techniques. We’ll experiment with two non-traditional binding methods - the Safety Pin Spine and the Fabric Tape Tab - both fun, accessible, and full of possibilities for personal expression.
Along the way, we will learn more about both mixed media and the construction of a journal, answering questions such as:
- What is a signature in book binding? (Hint: it has nothing to do with signing your name.)
- What happens when I use materials that are not meant to be used together?
- Why are all the pages in a book the same width and length? Do they have to be?
- How can one page suddenly become three unbound pages, or more?
- How can I create texture on my pages or book covers?
- What are tuck spots, flaps and waterfalls?
All materials will be provided. But, if you have a pile of scrap paper or even a scrapbook paper pad that you need to use up, please feel free to bring it along. I will have plenty of paper of all kinds, but if you’ve been looking for a way to use up your stash, this is it!
