Event description
Come explore techniques you can use to help keep your data outputs (e.g. reports, graphs) user-centered

About this Event

Have you ever yearned to know the “data behind” an issue or topic, but the graphs you find online leave you more confused? What about the other direction—have you ever crafted reports or graphs, but aren’t quite sure if your intended audience will fully understand the data or find it useful? Taking an iterative, user centered lens, you can test the usability and usefulness of your graphs and reports, enabling you to identify and address data design issues that might lead to confusion or misunderstanding.

Mission Capital is partnering with Texas Justice Initiative (TJI) to produce a hands-on, Members workshop, where we explore techniques you can use to help keep your data outputs (e.g. reports, graphs) user-centered. Participants will hear about how TJI has incorporated user feedback into their data work. Using TJI's data and website, participants will also learn about specific techniques, such as usability testing and heuristic evaluation, that can be applied to data work.

This is an entry-level workshop. Although no data skills are required, having some experience producing graphs or reports may be helpful. Participants will walk away with basic knowledge of key user centered techniques, as well as resources to deepen and apply that knowledge to data work. Participants are encouraged to bring their computers, tablets, or phones to engage with the data during hands-on activities.

Facilitators

The workshop will be led by Eva Ruth Moravec, Executive Director and Co-Founder of Texas Justice Initiative, and Reyda Taylor, Senior Consultant for Data and Evaluation at Mission Capital.
