Local Workshop Uses Chess to Build Kids’ Confidence, Focus, and Emotional Skills

The Cognificent Kids Network partnered with GRiT (Grandmasters in Training) invites families across West Michigan to the Minds in Motion Fall Chess Workshop & Mini Tournament, a unique event that blends chess strategy, mental wellness, and social-emotional learning for kids ages 8–14.

The event will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025, from 2:00 PM – 4:30 PM at Grand Valley State University’s L. William Seidman Center in downtown Grand Rapids.

Led by Coach Wilson, a Certified Chess Coach, and Takara Taylor, MA, MLP, a licensed mental health therapist and founder of Cognificent Kids Network, this hands-on workshop helps students strengthen focus, patience, and emotional regulation through the art of chess.

“Chess teaches kids how to think before they move—on the board and in life,” says Taylor. “When we combine chess with emotional learning, kids not only improve their strategy skills but also their self-control, confidence, and resilience.”

The workshop concludes with a mini-tournament, allowing young players to apply new strategies in a fun, supportive environment. Students of all skill levels are welcome—from beginners learning the basics to experienced players eager to sharpen their tactics.
