WHAT IS MESSY MOMENT?

What happens when we allow mess to be an opening, entrypoint and portal? In MESS WERK’s monthly workshop, join us as we delve into conversation, curiosity and collective making that creates openings for: recovering our tools, reminding us of the balm(s) of being with each other, cultivating alternatives to the isolation that anti-blackness fabricates in our lives and communities.

Inspired by the 11 "Little Experiments" pathways offered through MESS WERK, "Messy Moment" is a monthly virtual workshop that invites us to reflect collectively on (and beyond) the curated reflections questions.

Each month, a panel of guests will be invited to join, expand and play in the conversation!

REFLECTION QUESTIONS:

Rooted in the MESS WERK Little Experiments Pathway, “Moon Flower”, our October-November questions are about building community and holding space as an act that blooms in the dark — the unknown, the unknowing, the mystery — and grows wildly when folks are invited into co-creation, vulnerability and openness.

October Reflection Questions:

1: Where do you wish you had more playful bounce and fluid motion in co-creating containers? What could that look like? Who can you dream into that bounciness and fluidity with?

2: Our society normalizes the absence of consent. It calls the absence of consent logical and reasonable. How can absurdity open up new practices of consent in space holding?

November Reflection Questions:

1: What about holding space feels shrouded in darkness* for you? What are the sensory experiences of the darkness of community building?

2: Reflect on a mistake (unintentional accident) you’ve made holding space. Can you imagine a world where a mistake holds the same value as your “brilliant” ideas? What collective work + beliefs would allow that world to be so? What are the feelings that would emerge alongside mistake-making in this otherwise world? In this otherwise world, if harm is a by-product of the mistake, how is that held?

WHAT ARE LITTLE EXPERIMENTS?

Little Experiments are 2-hour exploratory sessions rooted in curiosity, designed to meet you where you are. Each session is facilitated by foster weems, steward of MESS WERK, is guided by your preferred ways of processing—whether that’s conversation, mapping, play, movement and/or sound-making—and supports you in uncovering more clarity (or more questions!) about an area you want to expand into, explore or understand more deeply.

From Okra (pleasure + kink) to Mint (structuring your ideas), from Moon Flower (holding space) to Stargazer (rest + ease), each path offers a container for diving into the big, weird, beautiful mess of your life and vision—without pressure.
