Event description

Description

Mental health care for a rapidly aging population is now, and will continue to be, a significant public health challenge. In 2014, there were 46.2 Americans over the age of 65, representing 14.5% of the US population - about one in seven Americans. Currently, roughly 15% of the aging population suffer from a mental disorder.

Older persons can exhibit a broad array of mental health issues, including those that can affect younger adults. They may have relapses of disorders diagnosed earlier in life; live with chronic physical illnesses and frailty; survive with persistent mental illness; or develop new psychiatric conditions in old age.

This introductory level 2.0 continuing education workshop will review different mental health conditions including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia in later life, and dementia. Participants will review risk factors, assessment, treatment and care options, as well as the impact on community health care systems.

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to :

* Articulate why people are living longer now in the United States than they did 100 years ago.

* Explain why there is an increase in dementia with age.

* Recognize the interplay of depression, anxiety, and medications in the older population.

* Apply the practice and principles of the "clinical interview" when assessing older persons for mental health issues.
